I really liked the composition of this one, but I couldn't get it together with the proportions so I scrapped it.

This is my 2nd (but really like 5th) I got really tired and frustrated so I just went for it and this is what is happening, I haven't spent enough time on the face or the hands (the 2 best parts) but I think its a reasonable start.

Favorite Album of the year. By miles and miles

I read "Bluebeard" by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and I adored it. As soon as it ended I wanted to pick it right back up and read it again. Brady recommended it to me, as he had just finished reading it, and wow. What an amazing book.

Buradian’s Ass

You have a donkey, which is equally as hungry as it is thirsty. You place the animal an equal distance between food and water, and the donkey ends up dying because it cannot make a decision between the two, each being just as important. In this thought experiment I equate the donkey to man, and the decision that falls on his shoulders in Matthew 6:24. Will he choose God, or mammon? If he doesn’t make a decision he will find himself in a state of stagnation.

Hot Girl Paradox

This one involves the age-old question that has plagued the campus, and hundreds more, for centuries (I would even go as far as to say since the dawn of man). Why do attractive women date and marry ugly dudes? I mean, when I look in the mirror I’m super glad that it happens because I’m no Lou Ferrigno.

The Lady and the Tiger

In an old kingdom, there is a King who has implemented a unique system of law. When someone is accused of a crime, the accused is placed in an arena with 2 identical doors in front of him. Behind one door is the fiercest tiger in the land, ready to spring and tear the defendant to shreds. Behind the second door is a beautiful woman hand picked by the king. If the defendant picks the woman, he is declared innocent and will be forced to marry her no matter what his marital status is. It would not matter if he is already married and loves his wife, he would be forced to live out the remainder of his life with her. If the defendant picks the door with the tiger, he is eaten alive and assumed to be guilty.
A lowly man accused of a crime falls in love with the king’s daughter. The two are madly in love and could not imagine themselves separated. Being the king’s daughter, the girl sees which door the tiger is put in. She holds the fate of her love in her hands. As the man is placed in the arena, he steals a glance at his love and she signals in the briefest of instants to him. But which door does she choose? Does she watch him die or watch him be forced to love another for the rest of their lives?

Schrödinger’s Cat

A cat is placed in a steel box containing a tiny amount of radioactive material and a vial of poison. The amount of radioactive material is so tiny that it could decay at any moment, triggering a hammer, which would smash the vial, release the poison, and kill the cat. Since the moment when the radioactive substance decays is not predictable, it is impossible to know whether the cat is dead or alive at any given moment. Therefore, the cat is simultaneously dead and alive from the perspective of the observer.

Brain in a Vat

If you were to plug a brain into a computer and feed it the same impulses as someone who was walking down the street, a brain in a vat would be no different than a brain in a skull. Broken down to a basic, the sensations we feel are nothing more than electric impulses firing in our brain, if it were possible to recreate those in a machine, how could we define reality?

Ship of Thesesus

Also referred to sometimes as Heraclitus’ river, this paradox has to do with the idea surrounding the replacement of the whole. If you were to step into a flowing river, then step back out of it, then re enter the river again; did you step into the same river? The notion has to do with what identity really is. Our body changes throughout our life, but we still remain the same person, right?

Twin Paradox

In this experiment you have a set of identical twins. One is sent into space faster than the speed of light, while the other remains on Earth. The twin who went to space returns home after a time and finds that she has aged less than her twin who stayed on Earth. There are many different interpretations and ideas surrounding this paradox, the one I addressed in this one was the concept of a life lived. Who, out of the two twins, has had a full life? Which one would consider their life well spent?

Meinong’s Jungle

In this thought experiment, Alexius Meinong poses a question about the existence of thoughts. If we think of something, doesn’t it exist in some manner somewhere, if only in your imagination? Since we have the ability to reference these imaginary objects, they must exist somewhere. They reside in a place called Meinong’s Jungle. A place where anything you can imagine exists.

* This last piece will have a bunch more updates, because what happens is, the painting is basically a giant chalkboard, my thought on it was to have any and everyone draw whatever they wanted on it, and at the end of the night I erase out all the chalk and then people draw all over it again. So everyday there is something new, this photo was after the first night

Finally an adventure I'm willing to leave the Shire (Yes, its a place, so therefore it's capitalized) for.

Not only do I fully support the idea of my food being a mystery to me, I am so on board with the concept of taking my bag of doritos to uncharted lands in order to discover the powder coating on my corn isosceles shaped chip. And finally! Family sized, so my siblings can also say phrases like "vexing, and intriguing" what a dream come true. Thank you Frito Lay, thank you, another milestone in science! I for one will be devoting every second of every day to this new pilgrimage of flavor

If there is one thing that will bring our nation back into the annals of history its solving this crisis before the Chinese. This is our new crusade, our fountain of youth (only with saturated fats).

And finally, a snack that evolves, (see illustration below, the one I slaved over for hours) a treat that comes with the thrill of the hunt. I think doritos is going to become an olympic event someday. I can see the genius of Frito Lay, they have finally found the missing link between art and science, man am I jonesing to get on to testing!

"Till we Have Faces" by C.S Lewis

This is a modern retelling of the myth of Cupid and Psyche. (Wikipedia link) The story however is told through the eyes of Psyche's older sister Orual.

C.S Lewis has been quoted saying, the story haunted him, which was one of the reasons I wanted to read it, the other reason this book was on my list, was my good friend and art hero Nick Bontorno said it was his favorite book. After reading it, I can understand only on a minuscule level why they both have these feelings toward it.

The book being a C.S Lewis book is filled to the brim with symbols and allegories, with signs of truths and nods at religious views and values, as are all of his books, but something happens when you use a pagan story in order to highlight christian ideas. It provides an environment for you to loosen up your "strict" ideas, and address them how I think an ancient Greek university would. Without judgement, without having to choose a side, it provides you a blank slate to come to conclusions you wouldn't have before considered. I think because of the pagan views, which are also religious the book allows you to stray but not far from the reverence of religion.
With that being said, I'm going to tell you about some of the ideas I got out of this book, since it is a myth you can just read quickly on wikipedia, spoilers aren't really an issue.

Orual is a "hobgoblin" of a woman, I mean that only in appearance, she is told many times in the book, of her ugliness and how if only she would have been born beautiful, how she could have been something. This really bothered me in the book, I was upset about how she was treated, she is admired for her thought and actions, but because she is physically unattractive, all of that feels like it doesn't matter. I related a lot to that, lately I have been trying my hardest to understand the objectification of women in the visual arts mostly. Its something that when its blatant its easy to pick up on, but there have been paintings and artists who I like and respect who do it subtlety, some of them might not even know or think they aren't doing it at all, it felt like that for Orual, that the men of the kingdom were showing her pity by feeling sorrow for her "looks"(with exception of her father, who was a major douche chill.) when they should have been acknowledging the beauty beneath her "mangled" outer shell. Why is a woman who is 100 pounds with no flaws pretty while the mother of 3 who has lived her life, whose trials and joys are apparent, not? (That is just one of the reactions I had to it, more of one that I personally might just get out of the book.)

The book is just filled with little ideas like that, though I feel the underlying message of the book would have to be the fact that Orual hated the Gods for stealing a loved one. Orual truly loved Psyche, she cared for her and raised her, she wished Psyche was her child. Psyche enlightened her life, she really enriched Orual's very existence. Psyche became her only reason for living, to protect, to guide, and to save her from sometimes, herself. There was this battle between the Gods and Orual for Psyche, but also a battle between who and what the Pagan Gods were themselves, which is what I alluded to earlier, the book gives you the ability to sort of pretend that God's many aspects and "faces" are individual Gods. ( I think that is basically what most Pagan Gods are, just different "moods" or periods of God. The God we perceive today is worlds apart from the one in the old testament.)

The short period of Psyche's life made me think of the Saviors, I felt some parrallels between the two in the book. It also allowed me to put myself in the place of Orual, how upset would you be if Jesus was born in your lifetime, and you spent all your days with him, watching him and listening to him, being a companion personally to him throughout his days on Earth, only to have him taken away? (in your mind prematurely) Psyche is sort of a Christ figure in this book, she brings light to many people, and is eventually sacrificed to the Gods for the people, she is given to the Shadowbrute, so the Gods will lift the famine and drought on the land. She accepts her fate, and welcomes it because of the belief she can help the kingdom. To have the one thing you feel has given your life purpose, taken away from you by a God whom you don't understand, love, or want. It makes me ponder on people who don't have the doctrine of our church, those who believe that our mortal existence is it. The rage and feeling of being wronged that rush through Orual I imagine is similar to those who have lost a loved one without a knowledge or testimony of a life after death. In this book, Psyche is really not heard of again, she is referenced all through-out but she has become a Goddess, while Orual is faced with a life without her, still debating whether or not her sister has become mad and deranged, perhaps an object of some cruel prank of the Gods. She is forced to continue her life "purposeless," with Psyche never far from her mind, but always far from her being. Orual dons a veil and becomes the Queen of her kingdom, she becomes one of the greatest rulers of the time, solving the problems of the lands, uniting kingdoms, enlightening her subjects, all behind a mask.

You can see there are just hundreds upon hundreds of ideas and themes in this book. I don't even think I can start to scratch the surface of this book. I think Nick told me he has read this book multiple times, and will continue to read it. I think that might become one of my goals as well. The book really is fantastic, it a book that needs multiple reads and a book that won't stop giving. I think the book has that ability to relate to anyone at any point in their life, as it is a tale of love lost, of faith renewed, of redemption, and to a life not wasted on the past. Also it's a fast read.

P.S I know that most of my friends and family are English majors, so tread lightly and understand, I am not.

Student Art Show 2010

These are some pictures from the show, it opened on the 14th with a little awards ceremony, which they changed up a little this year. They awarded Art Department Merit Awards and Honorary Merit Awards. The categories were judged by the faculty whether or not to be put into the show, then they were judged according to merit. I am happy to announce I got 2 pieces in, both in the printmaking category. The first one is called, "How do you solve a problem like Maria," which is playing off of Alphonse Mucha's middle name Maria, it's a dry-point portrait of him.

The second piece is a big ol' self portrait done in the style of one of my heroes Chuck Close. It's entitled "Chuck Close but no Cigar," this one was done with a hard ground on the plate then the plate was dropped into an acidic solution and etched. It took about 2 months to do, and was extremely frustrating, but hey it got in the show so it can't be all that bad. My good friend Chris loaned me a frame from his BFA show, which was extremely nice of him.

These are just some detail shots of the piece, each square is a quarter inch by a quarter inch. The plate is 18 inches by 24 inches, so a ridiculous amount of squares. Each square then has a certain amount of lines drawn into them to show a shade of value, so when you zoom out you get an image.

I have to really thank Carla for teaching me all of these techniques and letting me run free with them, not sure if she is glad she did that, but either way I'm very grateful for her. Even though she has told me many a time, that I got into the student show based off actually having decent pieces, not because we are friends, I think she was extremely nice to put them in the show. (Also she had other faculty come down and help her a little with judging, so she wouldn't come off as biased, which just restates her professionalism and how seriously she takes art) Plus she is just like super mean all the time so it's nice to have something almost maybe sort of appease her. (kidding kidding.........well a little.)

Still lives confuse me. That sounds like some sort of really deep and meaningful statement, but in reality it just means I'm not very good at painting still lifes or lives. I'm not sure. This painting is actually a lot cooler in person.

um this painting is 24 inches by 30 inches, so it is a beast, Also it is caked with oil paint. I finished it like 2 and a half weeks ago and it is still wet.

Of course, I put this one in as well. I didn't get to last year, because I hadn't made it yet. It won 1st in the illustration category! Which was super nice of Huntsman to give it first! I heart that guy.

I got one in the Printmaking category, which is awesome.

Oil Painting, with Griffin

Media Experimentation, paint the image using only warm colors, then put packaging tape over it, then paint it with cool colors, and scratch out some cool stuff.

This piece was my first edition ever, it was 2 different plates, and believe me when I tell you this. It was a pain to get them registered. Not the biggest fan of them but it was a nice refresher of what is takes to make those prints.

This was a piece I did while I was messing around in the printmaking lab, back when I had time to goof around in there. Hopefully I can get back in there pretty soon and start pumping out some more.

It's still cold outside, but warming up a little, since it is still a little bit chilly out the entertainment Gods have blessed us with this.

Three O' Clock High

Hulu has added one of the greatest movies ever, seriously this movie will blow your mind with pure unfiltered awesome. Brady talked about this movie like it was the ark of the covenant back in the day, so as soon as I found a copy I watched it, I was not disappointed. This movie is probably the best bully/fight movie around. I mean its the bad guy from Kindergarten Cop, how awesome is that. I didn't even know he was in any other movies.

KVCC East Gallery

I constitute about 20% of the gallery MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! over at KVCC they have a gallery that the Dean of the "Center for New Media" which is like the art department of KVCC, jurors. Both of the pieces I submitted made it so that is super cool. Also they print them off, so I didn't even have to pay for the prints.

A most excellent show, which I highly recommend. Yes, that is Harvey Keitel in the picture, he is on the show, seriously like you need any other reason to watch.

A little background, it's about a cop who in 2008 gets hit by a car, and goes into a coma. He wakes up in 1973, has an apartment, and has recently transferred under Harvey Keitel. The show is a mix of catching bad guys, trying to explain how things are done in 2008 versus 1973, and figuring out if he can make it back to 2008. One of the cooler things about the show, beside amazing 1970's cop action. I mean like in "So I married an Axe Murdered," when Mike Myer's friend is asking his boss to be more like a T.V. cop, this show is chock full of that. Beating up bad guys, borderline torture for information, sweet action beat cops that would put Sean Connery to shame in "The Untouchables."

This show has me hooked, I love watching it, the costumes are amazing too, there a lot of little details that you notice that make the show a little more "real." Like the cigarette packages, the coffee cups, the rotary telephones, the payphones they use in order to get back to headquarters.

Also in true form, this show is based off an award winning British show of the same name. Just goes to prove the British are amazing. (Top Gear. Single best bit of televison known to man)

It's on after "Lost," so just hang out after your mind is blown, and check it out, you will not regret it.

Holy crap ringling school is tearing it up with TWICE as many accepted entries than Academy of Art, and 22 more winners than Art Center! I thought that ringling was just a circus, but apparently they are amazing. If you search far and wide you will find hidden in there BYU-Idaho and you can see Josh's and I's work.

Something that is also noteworthy is the art that was chosen for the catalog, was a girl from Kendall School, which is up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a place that I have mocked on many an occasion, I feel now like I maybe will be put in my place.

There really is some just amazing work in this show, I am just glad to be put in the same room with some of these guys. I will say this though, SAM WEBER is a judge, which is awesome if I can meet that guy, I will get to check off one of the old life goals. It's even cool to think he is going to look at one of my pieces, btw too he is a super nice guy, I have talked to him a couple of time through emails.
